Short Walks: Dunstanburgh Castle

 

Setting foot from the village of Craster, enjoy a gentle stroll with spectacular sea views on your journey to the shattered ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. Dunstanburgh may have succumbed to the elements, but this remarkable castle still holds its own in the line of Northumberland’s great fortresses. Discover the gatehouse and the imposing Lilburn Tower before returning to Craster for crab sandwiches at The Jolly Fisherman Inn.

 
 

Step-by-step guide

1. Start at Craster Quarry car park.

2. Walk down the hill towards the car park exit.

3. You will see the visitor centre on your left. Turn right, go through a gate and follow the gravel path.

4. When the gravel path comes to an end - turn left onto Whin Hill Street.

5. When you reach the Jolly Fisherman Inn Pub, turn left.

6. Walk past L Robson & Sons LTD smokehouses on your left, and past Craster harbour on your right.

7. When you reach a fork in the road, turn right onto Dunstanburgh Road, following the sign to Dunstanburgh Castle.

8. Go through two gates before following a path across fields towards the Castle.

9. Explore the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle.

10. Retrace your steps back to Craster Quarry Car Park.
