Yes, the Kielder Forest Drive is Northumberland’s only toll road and the cost is £3.00 to enter onto the forest road. However, you are able to purchase a combined ticket which includes parking at various sites around Kielder Water for the cost of £7.00.

You can pay at the toll machine positioned at Kielder Castle.

Is there a speed limit?

Yes, the speed limit on the Kielder Forest Drive is 15mph.

What’s so good about it?

The Kielder Forest Drive is one of the highest roads in England, reaching over 1500ft. The forest road takes you on a journey into the most remote expanses of North Northumberland where panoramic views, forest scenery and native wildlife are in abundance.

The Kielder Forest Drive is a rough surfaced road suitable for 4x4s and passable by other cars with care.

When is the Forest Drive open?

The Kielder Forest Drive is open between May 1st - December 2nd. However, this can be subject to changes so be sure to check ahead.

I am doing the Northumberland 250 and would like to avoid the Kielder Forest Drive, is there a detour?

Yes, continue North out of Kielder to Saughtree before taking the B6537 to Jedburgh. At Cleuch Head take the A6088 and follow signs for the A68 before re-joining the route just North of Carter Bar.
