Northumberland’s Native Wildlife

As one of the wildest, rugged, and remote regions in England, Northumberland is home to a variety of thriving habitats and fascinating species. Our resident naturalist David Dinsley takes us through a selection of some of the wildlife you may encounter on your adventures in Northumberland.

Red Squirrel

Scarce

There are few Northumbrian animals quite as charming as the dapper red squirrel. These auburn beauties are the epitome of a woodland creature. Sadly, the Red Squirrel faces many challenges in its battle for survival. Luckily the woodlands of Northumberland remain a stronghold for these small bushy-tailed tree-dwellers.

Hen Harrier

Very Scarce

The foggy moors of Northumberland are home to ghostly raptors dwelling within the gloom, haunting the rolling hills and crags of less trodden lands. Now one of England’s rarest birds of prey, they call the remotest corners of Northumbria home. During the summer months, lucky hikers may encounter these ethereal creatures as they skydance over territory and quarter their dominion for prey.

Viviparous Lizard

Common

As you tread the myriad of paths that splinter across the Northumbrian countryside, your attention may be drawn downwards. A quick rustle in the grass, or a flicker through the undergrowth. Northumberland is home to lizards, and they’re much more widespread than one may assume. Look out for Viviparous Lizards basking in sunny south-facing locations.

Roe Deer

Common

Despite being an incredibly widespread animal, the most common sighting of a Roe Deer is a flash of their white bottoms as they dart for cover. But with a little stealth and caution, a close encounter with our most common deer species can be achieved. Generally a solitary animal, they can also be seen in small herds - usually during the winter months.

Grey Seal

Very Common

The shifting tides and rolling waves of the North Sea are home to the mystical Grey Seal. In the water, they move with nimble and sleek movements as they hunt amongst the kelp beds of our shallow North Sea. On land they move heavily, hauling themselves out to rest, pup and socialise. Easily disturbed on land, be conscious to give any hauled out Seals the space they require.

Buzzard

Very Common

The large, and broad-winged silhouette of the Buzzard is a common sight as you drive the country lanes of Northumberland. Our largest resident raptor is going from strength to strength and can be spotted just about everywhere; soaring on open wings in the haze of the midday sun, or perched on fence posts or pylons. Quite a vocal raptor, their distinctive ‘mewing’ call can often be heard as they fly overhead.
